The Old Man and the Sea, 2001 Lino cut, acrylic 8 x 9 ½ " Lent to this exhibition by Joni Myers of the MNSU Memorial Library, where it normally hangs in her office. Another copy of this work exists in the Kiyo Suyematsu Music Library located in the Earley Center for Performing Arts. It was donated to the music library by Leslie Peterson, also employed by the Memorial Library. Both prints were gifted to Myers and Peterson by the wife of the artist. Arnoldus J. Gruter was born in The Netherlands in 1930. After World War II he emigrated to Canada. His work was shown in galleries throughout Canada, North Dakota, and many central states. He was invited to be the Artist-in-Residence at MNSU and went on to earn his doctorate in clinical psychology in 1989. He also designed an iconic sculpture on campus, Waves, which everyone calls “the lips.” He continued to live in Mankato, MN until his death in 2015. The Old Man and the Sea is unique from many of Gruter’s other works. While he worked in many different mediums, much of his art is mixed media and brightly colored. This work is a black and white linocut with a single painted element.
