Unknown Title, no date Stone rubbing on paper 25 ¼ x 25 ½ '' This piece was found in the Nelson Hall storage closet, covered in a layer of dust. It is of unknown origin and reminiscent of Asian art. From far away, the piece appears to be made from fabric and colored thread. However, the work is actually a stone rubbing on very delicate paper. The mystery surrounding the background of this piece is not the only point of interest. The vibrant green and orange hues draw the eye, and the stylized leaves of the trees or the skirt of the main figures outfit keep our attention. Throughout the piece, a bell shape reoccurs. In eastern Asia, particularly China, the bell is a symbol of culture and reflection. Bells were a part of worship and the spread of information. In this image, the figure seems to be harvesting from the nearby vegetation, perhaps distracted from the bells in the background. Unknown Artist
